UKRN is pleased to announce the release of a new primer on community engagement in research. Community engagement in research is a complex topic, with approaches varying between disciplines. This primer is aimed at researchers, particularly those who are new to community engagement. We view community engagement as a way to meaningfully involve communities that are impacted by research in the research process.

Open engagement of societal actors is one of the key aspects under the UNESCO recommendation on open science (2021), highlighting the need to give all stakeholders a voice in the research process. Thus, community engagement is an integral part of open research, as ideally it should promote openness and equity in sharing power, information, and expertise between researchers and communities.
