Applications for the UKRN Research Leadership course have closed.

UKRN are offering a 2-day residential course at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor, Wednesday to Thursday, 10 to 11 December 2025 on Research Leadership.

We last offered this course in 2022, and you can read about the experiences of previous participants:

The Research Leadership course aims to introduce researchers and research enablers at all career stages to the fundamental principles of leadership and leadership skills in an academic context, through a combination of lectures, practical activities, and small group discussion on key topics.

Places on this course are valued at £1200 and we’re able to offer them to you heavily subsidised by UKRN’s Ground-Up project at £200 per place.

ELIGIBILITY

Applications are open to UKRN local network leads, anyone within a UKRN local network, and anyone UK based interested in working towards becoming a UKRN local network lead. If you’re interested in joining, please get in touch with us to see how you can get involved (ukrn-admin@bristol.ac.uk).

Successful applicants will be asked to complete approximately 4 hours of preparation work prior to attending the workshop, comprised of eight short webinars hosted on YouTube and a short reflective exercise.

There are 24 places on the course.

Successful applicants will be asked to pay a discounted registration fee of £200 which includes the cost of accommodation in your own room, and meals at Cumberland Lodge. A limited number of family rooms for those with caring responsibilities may be available (please ask us).

While we can’t cover travel costs for all applicants, please talk to us if the cost of travel to and from Cumberland Lodge would prevent you from being able to attend. A limited number of travel bursaries are available.

Your application should include:

  • a cover letter outlining why you would like to attend (up to 400 words)
  • a commitment to complete the 4 hours of preparation work prior to attending the workshop
  • a brief CV to indicate your career stage and experiences (up to 1 page)
