Byte-sized RSE

the following standalone episodes 11 to 20 November are included:

Content overview

Byte-sized RSE is a series of standalone mini training materials providing key research software skills in around 1.5-2 hours. We are offering the opportunity to complete selected episodes delivered by our training partner, the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI).

  • Code Development & Debugging with IDEs
  • Code Style, Quality & Linting
  • Intermediate Git
  • Code Review
  • Unit Testing Code
  • Continuous Integration

As these courses are offered as part of a train-the-trainer programme participants will also be expected to complete Carpentries Instructor Training (unless already completed) to help them develop the knowledge and skills to teach these episodes. A booking code will be provided to participants after enrolment in one or more of the Byte-sized RSE episodes.

Training type

This course does not include a section on pedagogy, but participants are also required to complete Carpentries Instructor Training. Please indicate that you require carpentries instructor training during the application process and we will issue a code to allow you to register for any public carpentries instructor training event.

Learning objectives

See the full descriptions and learning objectives for each course (episode).

  • Attend 2 hour training sessions delivered by SSI in full and participate in the exercises.
  • Use the code issued to you after registration to complete Carpentries Instructor Training (unless already completed).

Audience

Research Software Engineers (RSEs), researchers and postgraduates involved in computational research who already possess foundational computational skills and who are now:

  • looking for quick refreshers, tips, or wanting to improve the sustainability or quality of their research code and are keen on continuous learning without heavy time investment.
  • interested in advancing their skills and learning best practices for software in research.
  • seeking digestible content to bridge the gap between research and software and benefiting from short-form RSE tips/tools to improve their research workflows.

Level (Introduction, intermediate, advanced)
